"The Game-Changer: How Consistent One-on-Ones Drive Employee Engagement"

Written by Donna Thaxter, Training, Coaching, and Professional Development Consultant

Gallup and Quantum Workplace recently revealed eye-opening statistics that underscore the impact of regular one-on-one meetings between managers and employees. According to their research, managers engaging in consistent individual meetings with each team member are 1.5 times more likely to retain their entire team. Moreover, team members participating in these one-on-ones are three times more likely to feel highly engaged in their work. This highlights the undeniable link between regular, focused interactions and the positive outcomes they generate.

Benefits of One-on-One Meetings

Having worked closely with many results-focused organizations over the years, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative benefits of these meetings, including clarity around roles and performance expectations and relatable connections between the work each employee does and the big picture. Managers and team members alike attest not only to the measurable impact on productivity and morale but also express genuine enjoyment in the process. The question then becomes, how can leaders leverage this secret sauce to effective leadership?

How to Get Started

Setting clear expectations for one-on-ones is the first step. This includes defining the timing, frequency, and objectives for these meetings. Optimal timing typically falls around monthly intervals, with a recommended duration of approximately 30 minutes. Sharing the responsibility for setting the meeting agenda ensures mutually significant topics are addressed consistently. Focuses may include tracking performance goals, establishing priorities and timelines, discussing recent accomplishments or challenges, and dedicating time for coaching, feedback, and career development. By adhering to these best practices, leaders can unlock the full potential of regular one-on-one meetings and foster a culture of open communication and continuous improvement within their teams.
