Organizational Culture in the Remote Work Environment

By Bill Dolan, CMB

Don’t Allow Organizational Culture to Exist Only at Your Institution

Developing and maintaining a strong institutional culture is a major priority when you are at the office, so why would you allow that culture to deteriorate while your team works remotely? The values implemented by your bank or credit union actually become more significant to employee contentment as more employees work remotely.

A recent study launched by Walden University found that remote workers engaged far more when they have a personal connection to their institution’s mission and vision and when they feel the work culture is far more family oriented.

One of the biggest challenges employees face who work remotely can surely be isolation. At SCA, a call-in with our entire team was established and takes place twice a week through our video and audio conferencing, providing all of us with access to our co-workers, sharing our home lives and what is happening outside of the work environment. It may sound small, but through this communication channel, it has had a significant impact on our team dynamic and goes a long way to ensure our team members feel seen and appreciated for their contributions.

SCA already had a great culture prior to COVID-19, so it was not difficult to adapt our culture to suit this digital transition – it did take some creativity along with a great sense of humor at times. Brainstorm a couple of ideas and poll your employees for fun ideas to help your team band digitally. Just keep in mind that whatever you try, don’t assume your company’s culture will follow you to the virtual office. It takes planning and effort to make the leap along with attitude and self-confidence which is more important right now than ever. Just don’t allow your bank or credit union to take a backseat as you adapt to the new normal.
